Course Title:  Popular American Literature


Course Description: This elective course is an introduction to American popular literature. It will include an overview of five genres: fantasy, science fiction, mystery, realistic fiction, and historical fiction. The course will focus on reading lengthier texts for meaning and fluency and on learning about the context behind the selected novels.


Class Length: 50 minutes


Class Size: Ideally up to 20 students
(NOTE: Adjust small group size depending on how many students you have.)


Course Goals:


  1. introduce students to popular points of reference and collective consciousness which come from American literature that American people and media may refer to in everyday life
  2. inspire students to read for pleasure and personal growth
  3. improve students’ extensive reading skills, which includes reading for meaning and reading faster
